Oliver's Baby/Toddler and Queen/King Scrappy Squares, Film Quilt

Two matching quilts. Both for my grandson born in May. The smaller to be given when a baby. The larger when he turns 8.

The baby/toddler size is approximately 44"x58" and made with 1" finished squares. The queen/king size is 90"x100" and made with 1-1/2" finished squares.

I think this has a kinda funny story. I started the big quilt with the idea of giving it to charity - a way to use up a lot of scraps, sewing them into 9-patches as leaders and enders. I saw a similar looking quilt on Pinterest (sorry, I can’t give credit to where credit is due - some have told me the pattern is Film Five, but it was different than that - closer to what I have). I figured out how it could work with what I had. After completing it up to the blue border (no purple), I was done and showed off the top to all that would give it a glance.

When I showed it to my sister, Emerald, she said, “you’re keeping this one, right?” No, I planned to give it to charity. She looked askance and said again, more a statement this time, “you’re keeping this one, right?” But it wasn’t the right size if I kept it for a grandchild, and I’d have to make another one - smaller. And quite frankly, I was feeling rather done with sewing little squares. *sigh* OK. So I planned and made the baby size and added the purple borders (I didn’t have enough blue to make a baby one as well as add on to the larger one).

Quilted with Glide warm gray thread on the top and Glide 60 cool gray on the back. I used rulers to quilt the zigzag lines.

Here they are in their entirety.

Since the baby one was made with the intent to keep it, I did something I think cool. Look at it straight on. There are waves of dark and light in the big squares of color. And the little colored squares in the sashing (in between the big squares) the colors go in spectrum-y ways, flowing from one to the next.
